Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 becomes the biggest launch in 2012 on its way to claiming the UK No.1 spot. However, the blockbuster sequel is only the fourth biggest opener of all time in the UK.

Prior to the launch of Black Ops 2, only four games had sold a million or more copies in the UK: Call of Duty Black Ops, Modern Warfare 2, Modern Warfare 3 and FIFA 13.

Given that Black Ops 2 is now the fourth biggest launch, it’s safe to say it sold over a million units at launch.

Sales were also heavily loaded in favour of Xbox 360, with the system taking a chunky 60 per cent total sales. PS3 managed 38 per cent, with PC accounting for the remaining retail units.

Halo 4 is kicked down to No.2, FIFA 13 is at No.3, Assassin’s Creed 3 slips to No.4 and Skylanders Giants climbs to No.5.

Elsewhere, Black Ops Declassified debuts at No.16 and becomes the second biggest launch on Vita.

Even further down the chart you’ll find a trio of new releases: Sony’s Wonderbook is at No.25, Codemasters’ F1 Race Stars at No.26 and SEGA’s All-Stars Racing Transformed at No.27. LittleBigPlanet Karting has slipped to No.28.

Over a million units is certainly not to be sniffed at for Black Ops 2, but the game has sold fewer units than Black Ops, Modern Warfare 2, Modern Warfare 3. It will be interesting to see how much of a tail Blops2 has, especially given multiplayer is being extremely well received.

Kart racers may be the next genre to be abandoned, with all three of this autumn’s major titles failing to attract gamer attention.

Look out for Hitman Absolution next week, but we’re not confident the game will have enough about it to displace Black Ops 2 at the top. LEGO Lord of the Rings may also take a Top 10 place, and will surely stick around with The Hobbit motion picture on the horizon. Also look out for PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale and Disney Epic Mickey 2, although anything higher than Top 20 places would be a surprise.
