Ubisoft has announced it’s working on a new cloud-based game engine for future titles which it has dubbed Scalar.
According to the announcement, Ubisoft Scalar will “unlock the power and flexibility of cloud computing” for the company’s game engines. The company claims that it’ll reduce the dependency on player’s hardware and provide new possibilities. Hopefully, Ubisoft say, the tech will offer devs and players “the inherent freedom and benefits of a cloud-native experience to power the games of tomorrow.”
Aside from buzzwords, Ubisoft say the system can place each component and system in the cloud independently. This includes things like AI, audio and physics, for example. The tech can then apparently dynamically stop and start these services depending on the player or developer. This, Ubisoft say, will allow things like vast virtual worlds or incredibly deep simulations, for example.
The company also claims that this new Ubisoft Scalar tech is easy to update and expand. So much so, in fact, that it claims new features could be added to games without patches or updates interrupting play sessions. They intend for this service to be platform-antagonistic too, no matter which format you play on.
Ubisoft say that Scalar will be made available to all its studios eventually. However, to begin with the team at Ubisoft Stockholm are already working a brand new IP. The publisher claims this unnamed project will use the tech at its “full potential to deliver an experience at a scale never seen before”. It’ll reveal more details about this new IP at a later date.
