The top trend on Twitter right now is #WWIII. With well over 1 million tweets, it seems many are worried that the recent airstrike attack that killed Iranian military commander Qasem Soleimani may escalate into an all-out global conflict. Considering this, it’s no surprise that many Twitter users, and even Twitter itself, seem to be confused why “Giant Bomb” has been trending today as well.
It’s easy to forgive people for assuming “Giant Bomb” is trending due to recent events, especially since Twitter has grouped it in with other trends like “Russia” and “China.” At this point, the Giant Bomb Twitter trend may very well be tied more to those keywords, but the reason it started trending has nothing to do with global warfare - it’s in reference to the video game website Giant Bomb.
Dan Ryckert, a longtime video game journalist who worked at Game Informer before Giant Bomb, is leaving the website to work for the WWE. Ryckert made the announcement on Twitter earlier this morning, which is what caused Giant Bomb to start trending. Ryckert’s initial post on the matter has thousands of likes as well as hundreds of comments and re-tweets at the time of this writing.
For those wondering why Ryckert is transitioning from his role as a video game journalist to working for WWE, it’s because of his passion for professional wrestling. In a follow-up tweet, Ryckert explained that his “two biggest passions have always been video games and wrestling.” However, even though Ryckert will be working at WWE in Stamford, Connecticut, it doesn’t mean he will be involved in programs like Monday Night Raw or Friday Night SmackDown.
While Ryckert may very well have the charisma to be an on-air personality for the WWE, he will instead be working behind the scenes. More specifically, Ryckert will be producing podcasts for the WWE, including popular WWE podcasts like After the Bell (hosted by Corey Graves) and The New Day: Feel the Power.
WWE has been more serious about pursuing podcasts in recent years, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see the company expand into making even more podcasts starring various superstars on its roster.
