The three heroes of Trine are back in the whimsically immersive world with Trine 4. Amadeus the wizard, Pontius the Knight, and Zoya the thief join forces once more to work their way through the puzzle-laden world. This time, however, they face new threats and have gained some new skills to combat them.

The New Storyline and Gameplay

In Trine 4 the heroes band together again to locate and save Prince Celeus from the Astral Academy. The catch here is that the Prince’s nightmares have enlivened, breaking free of his dreams and roaming the waking world, poised to attack any who approach him. The three heroes must fight through this army of phantom-like monsters and may even have to face their personal nightmares along the way. To accomplish this, Trine 4 has introduced the ability to activate all three heroes simultaneously in moments of need.

There are also now three modes of gameplay. Along with the classic single-player and 3-person multiplayer modes, there is now also the Unlimited mode. This mode allows for up to four players and introduces the ability for everyone to play as the same character simultaneously.

New Character Skills and Abilities

The characters each have acquired some new abilities to enhance their original skillset. For Amadeus that means a big boost to his levitation skills. Pontius finds himself more equipped than ever for combat. And Zoya has never been so efficient at swinging her way across the map and confounding enemies.

Amadeus

Amadeus now has the ability to learn new spells, conjuring different objects such as a large balls, providing new ways to solve the various puzzles. He has also enhanced his levitation skills immensely since last we met this quirky wizard. He can now levitate his foes and fling them across the map.

Pontius

In a kingdom overrun with nightmares, it’s only fitting that Pontius has learned to conjure Dream Shields. These are copies of his own shield that he may place in any orientation on the map and that stay fixed in place as long as need be. In battle, Pontius can now wield his new Lightning Sword to paralyze foes, or utilize his new Frost Stomp ability to freeze them.

Zoya

Zoya has acquired a new Faerie Rope that she can use to tether enemies together or to herself if the situation calls for it. Used in the right way, it can produce a helpful levitating effect. Her new Elemental Arrows also help Zoya across the map as well as in battle, especially against elemental foes. Her enhanced Critical Arrows can cause massive amounts of damage, while her new Roll ability allows her to evade harm more swiftly than ever.

Trine 4 is set to release on October 8th for the PC, PS4, X-Box One, and Nintendo Switch. With new foes, abilities, enhanced gameplay, and updated mechanics, this newest installation is sure to live up to the series’ illustrious reputation and boast hours of new puzzle-solving conundrums.
