A lost game of the 16-bit era is getting a brand new look for a new generation, as new footage of the Trials of Mana shows off the remake’s gameplay and voice acting. The third game of the lauded Mana series was never released in the United States during its initial run on the Super Famicom, but fans of classic JRPGs will get a chance to play the final chapter of the Mana trilogy on modern consoles and PC.
The recent trailer for Trials of Mana shows off protagonists Angela and Duran, detailing their backstory and how they come to cross paths in their mutual quest to take down the Crimson Wizard. Angela is a disgraced princess who is exiled by her mother under the influence of the Crimson Wizard. Duran is on a quest for vengeance, armed with his father’s sword, and has the Wizard in his sights. Once the two meet and realize their intentions, they join forces and head off into conflict.
Previous trailers have shown off fellow protagonists Hawkeye, Kevin and Charlotte in solo capacity, but the three will be featured in further trailers along with Riesz, the lone holdout who has yet to have made an appearance. While the game trailer does show off the mechanics and the English voice action, there is little doubt that the original Japanese language track will be included in the final release this coming April.
The Mana series was a true gem of the golden era of JRPGs, but the US release of Trials is coming more than three decades after its original release. Though the game was a critical hit in Japan and Europe, it wasn’t until the early days of emulation and translation patches that this game made it to US shores. Trials was lauded for its combat, story and multiplayer elements and is considered the best game in the Mana trilogy.
Fans who want to play Trials as well as the entire Mana trilogy can do so by downloading the games on Nintendo platforms, or by purchasing the Collection of Mana, which includes the original ports of the games. Last year, a remake of Secret of Mana was released in the same vein as Trials will be, but that release was exclusive to the PlayStation 4 and PC. Trials will be available on the Switch, PlayStation 4 and PC on April 24, 2020.
