Last year, Creative Assembly released Total War Saga: Thrones of Britannia. Let’s just say that it didn’t necessarily set the world on fire, as you can see in our official review. A lukewarm reception followed by more disappointments also led to the admission of its game director that Britannia did face a lot of growing pains given player feedback. Fast forward, and we’ll now see what the next spinoff title in the franchise can offer. That’s right, a brand new Saga game — Total War Saga: Troy — has just been announced. Total War Saga: Troy
Fans have already known for a while that the Aegean will be the next setting for a Total War game. That was after it was revealed that Creative Assembly filed for the trademark around a month ago. In any case, the idea Creative Assembly has would be to focus on unique and engaging mechanics that would set the spinoff Saga games apart compared to the mainline series offerings. Like Total War Saga: Thrones of Britannia and Fall of the Samurai (which was recently rebranded as a Saga title), Troy will also focus on a particular flashpoint event in history: the Trojan War.
The trailer above treats us with a visual spectacle of the glorious campaign that happened ages ago. Paris took Helen, the wife of Sparta’s King Menelaus. Helen’s face “launched a thousand ships,” and the incident led to the decade-long conflict between Greece and Troy.
As you can see from the trailer, we’ll have Achilles and his Myrmidons as well as Hector and elite Trojan warriors. Oh, and look at that brutal “Spartan Kick.” We’ll also see legendary figures such as Agamemnon, Odysseus, and other larger-than-life characters. Perhaps we might spot Ajax, Antilochus, Sarpedon, Aeneas, Penthesilea, Memnon, and more.
If Total War: Three Kingdoms combined historical realism with fantastical flair, epic duels, and unique artistic presentation, then perhaps Total War Saga: Troy might go even further. The campaign map alone is akin to murals, tapestries, and artworks of yore from the classical period of antiquity. Another notable change would be the game’s economy whereby you’ll deal in gold, food, wood, stone, and bronze to construct buildings and recruit units.
