Toejam and Earl: Back in the Groove from Humanature Studios is seeking $400,000 via Kickstarter funding.
Although closely linked to SEGA, the rights to the franchise are actually owned by Humanature, a studio founded by Toejam and Earl co-creator Greg Johnson.
“I, along with some bright and talented friends, are finally going to make that ultimate Toejam and Earl sequel that the fans have been asking for all these years,” said Johnson.
“Will it be like game one or game two, you ask? Well… (holding breath)… mainly like game one. We plan to go old school with this one. Fixed isometric camera, 2D sprites, simple controls, and an emphasis on coop play. It will also pull in some of the more beloved elements from game two, AND we have a list of exciting new gameplay elements planned as well.”
The game will sport a retro visual vibe inspired by the comics of the 90s and feature randomly generated levels.
Although currently targeting PC, Mac and Linux, Humanature hopes to bring the game to other formats in the future.
With 29 days to go the project has already received $90,000 of its $400,000 target.
