It’s been a while since PlayStation tried to invade our nightmares via a super creepy ad, but the new one below has managed to do that tenfold.
Advertising comes in a lot of weird and wonderful ways. There’s the good old fashioned method of showing people products in the hope they will buy them. There’s also subliminal advertising. It’s not quite as in the consumer’s face but the aim is the same, to make people purchase a product. Then there are ads that are downright bizarre and don’t appear to serve any sort of purpose.
Perfume and aftershave ads are the worst offenders, and some car companies can be guilty of doing the same. Sometimes we’re left trying to guess what the product was even supposed to be advertising, and if the name of the product didn’t flash up on the screen right at the end, we’d be none the wiser.
What some of you might not have known is PlayStation has been guilty of doing this in the past, and its latest ad is a callback to those days. PlayStation’s latest ad, which you can check out below, shows a group of terrified looking soldiers dropping into a massive underground tunnel. At the end of the tunnel is a room filled with human hearts in glass cases.
Weird, right? Well, it gets a lot weirder. Those hearts are all beating, and are connected to PS4s. Yeah, we don’t get it either and felt well and truly creeped out after watching it for the first time. The caption at the end reads “feel the power of PlayStation.” Since the focus of the ad is a bunch of beating hearts and considering when the ad dropped, we’re assuming it is tenuously linked to Valentine’s Day, but we’re not sure how or why.
As mentioned above, PlayStation has a history of baffling and creepy ads. The one above was for the PlayStation 2, although we’re not sure which of the console’s features it was supposed to be flaunting. The only weird ad PlayStation created that sort of made sense, but might well be the creepiest of all, was for the PS Vita. It featured a woman with breasts on her front and back accompanied by the slogan “touch both sides for added enjoyment.” Not sure that would fly today.
