Video game heroes occupy a special place in our hearts. Because we —the gamer— steer them through hardship and trial, we develop a close relationship with the characters we use. Being directly in control of every game’s protagonist lets us see through their eyes and put ourselves in their shoes.
They come in all shapes and sizes. Some heroes are short and sweet, some are tough and tall — and some don’t talk at all! Ranging from the world of anime to ultra-realistic and gritty hellscapes, these heroes each made their mark on gaming history. In the over 30 years of video game releases, the industry has produced a myriad of inspiring, timeless characters. Not only the characters themselves but the people who made them hail from all over the globe. Japanese companies like Nintendo or Capcom dominated the console market in during the 90s, but Western studios have also left a proud mark on the industry.
